WhatsApp Business Catalog Bulk Upload: How to Add Many Products at Once
The WhatsApp Business app has no bulk upload. It adds products one at a time. To upload many at once, put your products in a spreadsheet, upload it to a catalogue in Meta Commerce Manager, then connect that catalogue to WhatsApp Business. Be careful: connecting it hides the catalogue you made in the app.
Is there a WhatsApp Business catalog bulk upload in the app?
No. In the WhatsApp Business app you add each product on its own: tap Tools, then Catalog, then Add new item. Each one needs photos, a unique name and a country of origin. There is no spreadsheet import in the app.
For 20 products that is fine. For 300 products it is a long weekend. That is why the Commerce Manager route exists.
How the bulk upload route works
Make a catalogue in Meta Commerce Manager
Commerce Manager is Meta's free tool for product catalogues used on Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp.
Upload a spreadsheet of products
Meta calls this a data feed. It can be an Excel, CSV, TSV, XML or Google Sheets file.
Connect it to WhatsApp Business
In the app, open your catalogue settings and tap Connect catalog.
Step 1: Get your spreadsheet ready
Meta gives you a template, so you don't have to guess the column names.
- Go to Commerce Manager and pick your catalogue.
- Open the Catalogue tab and go to Products or Data sources.
- Click + Add, then Data file.
- Click Download template and choose Excel or CSV.
- Fill in one product per row. For colours or sizes of the same product, Meta says to add each one in its own row with the same item_group_id.
If you use Google Sheets, Meta says the products must be on the first tab, and the sheet must be shared as "Anyone with the link".
Step 2: Upload the spreadsheet
- In Commerce Manager, open your catalogue, then Catalogue, then Data sources.
- Click + Add and choose Data file.
- Upload the file from your computer, or paste a link to it. With a link, you can set the upload to run every hour, day or week.
- Name the feed and pick a default currency, like INR.
How to check it worked: when the upload finishes, Commerce Manager shows how many products were added and lists any errors to fix. Meta says one file can be up to 4 GB.
Step 3: Connect the catalogue to WhatsApp Business
WhatsApp says you need two things first: the catalogue in Commerce Manager, and your Facebook Page linked to your WhatsApp Business account. Then, in the app:
- Open the Tools tab and tap Catalog.
- Tap the menu, then Catalog settings.
- Tap Connect catalog. If asked, tap Continue.
- Tap Confirm.
Watch out: WhatsApp says connecting a Meta catalogue archives the catalogue you already made in the app. Archived catalogues are not visible to customers. If you disconnect later, WhatsApp says your old catalogue comes back.
How to check it worked: WhatsApp says changes to a connected catalogue should appear in the app within 24 hours. Open your catalogue on another phone after a day.
Things to know before you switch
- You can't edit in the app any more. WhatsApp says a connected catalogue is changed in Commerce Manager, not the WhatsApp Business app. Adding, hiding and deleting all happen there.
- Every product is still reviewed. Expect a wait after a big upload. See how catalog approval works.
- The same rules apply. Banned goods are still rejected. Our guide on why WhatsApp rejects catalog items lists them.
- The feature may not be on your phone yet. WhatsApp says connected catalogues may not be available to everyone.
What we see with real shops: owners set up Commerce Manager once, then stop updating the spreadsheet. Six months later the WhatsApp catalogue still shows last season's stock. Pick one person to update the sheet every week.
Can I import an Excel file into the WhatsApp Business catalog?
Not straight into the app. Upload the Excel file to a catalogue in Meta Commerce Manager, then connect that catalogue to WhatsApp Business, as shown above.
Do I need a Facebook Page for bulk upload?
Yes. WhatsApp says the Facebook Page linked to your Meta catalogue must be connected to your WhatsApp Business account before you can connect the catalogue.
Send us the spreadsheet instead
If Commerce Manager feels like too much, send your product list and photos to us on WhatsApp. We build your catalogue as one web link, sort the products into categories, and make the updates when you send changes. There is no Facebook Page or spreadsheet format to learn. See a real one: R.S Furniture (Factory Outlet), with 30 products. Read how it works on our WhatsApp catalogue page, and check the WhatsApp catalog product limit guide if you are not sure which route fits.
