WhatsApp Catalog vs Website Catalog: Which One Does Your Shop Need?

Quick answer

The WhatsApp catalogue is free and works well for a small range sold to people who already chat with you. A website catalogue costs money, but opens in any browser, carries your shop name, skips WhatsApp's review and lets Google find your products. Many shops use both: the WhatsApp catalogue for chats, and a website catalogue for everything else.

WhatsApp catalog vs website catalog side by side

Here is how the two compare for a small Indian shop. The WhatsApp facts come from the WhatsApp Help Center. The website facts are for a OneCatalog catalogue, since that is what we build. Other website builders will differ.

When the WhatsApp catalogue is enough

Stick with the free WhatsApp catalogue if most of these are true:

  • You sell fewer than about 30 products.
  • Your customers already have your number and chat with you on WhatsApp.
  • You have time to add and update items yourself.
  • Your products don't change much from month to month.

Our guide on how to add a catalog to WhatsApp Business walks you through it on Android and iPhone.

When a website catalogue does better

  • New customers find you on Google. A customer searching "sofa shop in Koramangala" can land on your product page.
  • Customers without your number. You can put the link on Instagram, Google Maps, a visiting card or a QR code at the shop counter.
  • A big range. Hundreds of products are hard to add one by one. Our guide to the WhatsApp catalog product limit covers this.
  • No waiting. If review waits or rejected items cost you sales, a website catalogue has no review queue.
  • Your name on the link. A link like sofasquare.onecatalog.in looks like a real shop, and customers remember it.

What we see with real shops: a common setup is to keep the WhatsApp catalogue for regular customers, and to use the website catalogue link for new enquiries, Google and Instagram. Both send the customer back to the same WhatsApp chat.

Can I use a WhatsApp catalog and a website catalog together?

Yes. They don't clash. WhatsApp even lets you add a website link to each catalogue item. Keep the WhatsApp catalogue for quick chats, and share the website link everywhere else. Every enquiry still lands in your WhatsApp chat.

Is a website catalog hard to update?

Not with OneCatalog. You send new photos and prices on WhatsApp, and we make the change. Every plan includes 12 update requests a year, of up to 10 products each. Extra batches are ₹299 for 10 products. See every plan on the pricing page.

Which one should I start with?

If you have never had a catalogue, start with the free WhatsApp one. It costs nothing and teaches you which products customers ask about. When you outgrow it, or want customers to find you on Google, add a website catalogue. Read how ours works on the WhatsApp catalogue page. If your WhatsApp catalogue has problems today, see our guide to a WhatsApp catalogue not showing.
